Discover Himmerland from The Ancient Road routes

In Himmerland you can choose between two routes: start from Løgstør in the west or from Aalborg in the east – or, if you have enough time – you can try both of them.

On Hærvejen in Himmerland

In Himmerland you can choose between two routes: start from Løgstør in the west or from Aalborg in the east.

The Ancient Road leads through the cosy town Løgstør at the Limfjord. This is where the historic Hærvejen crossed the Limfjord in the past, possibly at the small elevation in front of the Aggersborg Viking fortress and the church of Aggersborg. South of Løgstør the route leads you along the old train tracks in the direction of Viborg. On the journey you pass through the small towns that were once right on the former track routing: Vindblæs with its mill, Gatten and Hornum. You can look forward to the amazing heathland in Himmerland.

We have collected a few attractions here for your inspiration.

The route continues through open agricultural land through Øster Hornum towards the hillside where Frendrup Nihøje has reigned for more than 3000 years. Continue along the small Himmerland roads and make a stop to see the rune stone in Skivum Church. In Aars, the route runs together with Hærvejen from Hirtshals / Løgstør south towards Viborg.
